OpenAI may go bankrupt by 2024, AI bot costs company $700,000 every day
While OpenAI and ChatGPT opened up to a wild start and had a record-breaking number of sign-ups in its initial days, it has steadily seen its user base decline over the last couple of months. According to SimilarWeb, July 2023 saw its user base drop by 12 per cent compared to June – it went from 1.7 billion users to 1.5 billion users. Do note that this data only shows users who visited the ChatGPT website, and does not account for users who are using OpenAI’s APIs

WGA Response to Studios Indicates No Quick End to Strike
https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/wga-response-studios-not-quick-strike-1235697413/
The two sides remain at odds on items across the board, including streaming residuals and a higher minimum tier for TV writer-producers
The WGA wants to tie streaming residuals to the popularity of a show, but streamers had adamantly refused to share such viewership data.
The WGA is also seeking a provision that would allow its members to honor other unions’ picket lines.

Most bosses regret how they mandated workers return to the office. They blamed it on not having enough data
Four in five (80%) of bosses told workplace software firm Envoy that, had they had a better grasp on actual employee preferences, they would have taken a starkly different approach to their return to office plans. The problem, they said: They didn’t have access to workplace data to help them make their decision.

Getting Started With 3D Gaussian Splatting for Windows (Beginner Tutorial)
https://www.reshot.ai/3d-gaussian-splatting
what are 3D Gaussians? They are a generalization of 1D Gaussians (the bell curve) to 3D. Essentially they are ellipsoids in 3D space, with a center, a scale, a rotation, and “softened edges”.
Each 3D Gaussian is optimized along with a (viewdependant) color and opacity. When blended together, here’s the visualization of the full model, rendered from ANY angle. As you can see, 3D Gaussian Splatting captures extremely well the fuzzy and soft nature of the plush toy, something that photogrammetry-based methods struggle to do.

A Brief History of Color in Art
www.artsy.net/article/the-art-genome-project-a-brief-history-of-color-in-art
Of all the pigments that have been banned over the centuries, the color most missed by painters is likely Lead White.
This hue could capture and reflect a gleam of light like no other, though its production was anything but glamorous. The 17th-century Dutch method for manufacturing the pigment involved layering cow and horse manure over lead and vinegar. After three months in a sealed room, these materials would combine to create flakes of pure white. While scientists in the late 19th century identified lead as poisonous, it wasn’t until 1978 that the United States banned the production of lead white paint.

GretagMacbeth Color Checker Numeric Values and Middle Gray
The human eye perceives half scene brightness not as the linear 50% of the present energy (linear nature values) but as 18% of the overall brightness. We are biased to perceive more information in the dark and contrast areas. A Macbeth chart helps with calibrating back into a photographic capture into this “human perspective” of the world.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_gray
In photography, painting, and other visual arts, middle gray or middle grey is a tone that is perceptually about halfway between black and white on a lightness scale in photography and printing, it is typically defined as 18% reflectance in visible light
Light meters, cameras, and pictures are often calibrated using an 18% gray card[4][5][6] or a color reference card such as a ColorChecker. On the assumption that 18% is similar to the average reflectance of a scene, a grey card can be used to estimate the required exposure of the film.
