Silicon Valley’s biggest companies are snapping up the people and technology behind some of Hollywood’s blockbusters in an effort to improve their augmented- and virtual-reality offerings.

“It’s harder to make as much money working in visual effects,” said Paul Debevec, a veteran of the visual-effects industry who is now a professor at the University of Southern California. About 4½ years ago Google hired Mr. Debevec, an award-winning pioneer in the creation of convincing digital humans, to help the company advance extended reality.

Working in visual effects in film and TV can mean long, unpredictable hours, limited compensation, poor job security and paltry benefits—many call it the “cool tax” one pays for the pleasure of working in Hollywood.

www.pcgamesinsider.biz/news/71461/unity-is-finally-going-public/

techcrunch.com/2020/08/24/unitys-ipo-numbers-look-pretty-unreal/

Between calendar 2018 and 2019, Unity’s revenue rose by 42 per cent year-on-year to $541.8m. Meanwhile, the firm’s revenue for the six months ending June 30th, 2020 was $351.3m, an increase of 39 per cent. The company has clocked up net losses of $163.2m for the year ending December 31st 2019 and $54.1m for the six months concluding June 30th, 2020.

Unity reckons the market it addresses around the world is worth around $29bn, across both video games and other creative industries it works in.

Unlike Epic Games, Unity has long worked with the major platforms and gaming companies to get their engine in front of as many developers and gamers as possible. In fact, the company estimates that 53% of the top 1,000 mobile games on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store and over 50% of mobile, personal computer and console games were made with Unity.

In response to the complaint, Cinesite had originally claimed that employees were not entitled to the overtime pay specified in the province’s Employment Standards Act, because animation artists were high-technology professionals developing information systems.

The Employment Standard Branch’s investigating officer, however, ruled that the exclusion did not apply to studio workers whose primary job was using commercially available software to create visual effects.

Equirectangular 360 videos/photos to Unity3D to VR
/ IOS, production, software, VR

SUMMARY

  1. A lot of 360 technology is natively supported in Unity3D. Examples here: https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/essentials/tutorial-projects/vr-samples-51519
  2. Use the Google Cardboard VR API to export for Android or iOS. https://developers.google.com/vr/?hl=en https://developers.google.com/vr/develop/unity/get-started-ios
  3. Images and videos are for the most equirectangular 2:1 360 captures, mapped onto a skybox (stills) or an inverted sphere (videos). Panoramas are also supported.
  4. Stereo is achieved in different formats, but mostly with a 2:1 over-under layout.
  5. Videos can be streamed from a server.
  6. You can export 360 mono/stereo stills/videos from Unity3D with VR Panorama.
  7. 4K is probably the best average resolution size for mobiles.
  8. Interaction can be driven through the Google API gaze scripts/plugins or through Google Cloud Speech Recognition (paid service, https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/add-ons/machinelearning/google-cloud-speech-recognition-vr-ar-desktop-desktop-72625 )

  • Skybox cubemap texturing, shading and camera component for stills.
  • Video player component on a sphere’s with a flipped normals shader.
  • Note that you can also use a pre-modeled sphere with inverted normals.
  • Note that for audio you will need an audio component on the sphere model.
  • Setup a Full 360 stereoscopic video playback using an over-under layout split onto two cameras.
  • Note you cannot generate a stereoscopic image from two 360 captures, it has to be done through a dedicated consumer rig.

Spatial Media Metadata Injector – for 360 videos
/ python, VR

The Spatial Media Metadata Injector adds metadata to a video file indicating that the file contains 360 video. Use the metadata injector to prepare 360 videos for upload to YouTube.

github.com/google/spatial-media/releases/tag/v2.1

The Windows release requires a 64-bit version of Windows. If you’re using a 32-bit version of Windows, you can still run the metadata injector from the Python source code as follows:

  • Install Python.
  • Download and extract the metadata injector source code.
  • From the “spatialmedia” directory in Windows Explorer, double click on “gui”. Alternatively, from the command prompt, change to the “spatialmedia” directory, and run “python gui.py”.
